Shinya Ito, MD, FRCPC is Professor and Chief, Division of Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology, Department of Paediatrics, Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto. He also holds a position of Senior Scientist of the Research Institute at the Hospital for Sick Children, and Professor of Pharmacology/Toxicology, Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Toronto. He was President of the Canadian Society for Pharmacology & Therapeutics (2013-2015), and Chair of the Specialty committee in Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (2010-2016). He has been Associate Editor of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics since 2008. In addition to clinical activity in the field of pediatric pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, adverse drug reactions and pharmacogenetics, his research program revealed the underlying mechanism of lactation-associated induction of a drug transporter, BCRP, in the mammary gland. His group also showed the potential of population pharmacokinetics approaches for the simulation of drug excretion into milk, compensating for a lack of clinical trials in this field.
